Bento or Sandwich?

Do you prefer Bento rather than Sandwich?

Bento is Japanese culture. It makes us happy.
There are some reasons that Bento is special; the color, tast, location, who we eat with and so on.

Originally, Bento came from China.
The ethymology is convenient(便當) and after introduced in Japan, other Kanji was applied.

Why Bento is so common?
Japanese rice has the characteristic that it's delicious even if it get cold.
Therefore, the Bento culture in Japan was developed, compared with other countries.

In this week, Bento culture was appeared in two dramas which I watched.
One is "Goddess who lost her name".
The main character Yuko go on a excursion of kindergarten with her son Kenta.
They eat lunch with their friend family.

The other is "Good life".
The main character's son Waku is leukemia and has been in the hospital.
His father goes out with him to let Waku forget his troubles.
One of Waku's requests for going out was a delicious Bento.

Bento is our status of picnic and one of the amusement for the picnic.
And it is not only for picnic, but also daily.
In the homemade Bento, a lot of love is contained.

Otherwhile, American lunch style is almost sandwich, apple, yogurt and snacks.
I think it is also good, but Bento is more tasteful.

How do you think?

  3. American lunches can be really boring, but picnics are fun. We make lots of different salads, sandwiches and cakes. The thing I like about American picnics is that everyone shares the same food instead of having their own little boxed lunches. But Japanese bentos are sooooooo good too!

  4. Although the word "Bento" has root in Chinese word 便當-Convenient, bento itself was born in Japan. The word was applied afterwards. For your information.
